Hornet Health Center

The Hornet Health Center is a school wellness program operated by Health Department of Northwest Michigan, in collaboration with Pellston Public Schools, located in the Pellston High/Middle School.

We offer services to anyone aged 5 to 21 (and their children). Appointments are available during the school year and same-day appointments may even be available during our hours of operation (listed below). We offer health care and prevention services, including screenings to detect behavioral or developmental issues, and information for parents and guardians on nearly any topic related to child and adolescent health. No one is denied services due to inability to pay. There are no out-of-pocket costs. We bill health insurance policies - Medicaid, MI-Child, Healthy Kids, or private insurance like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan if youth have coverage. We also assist uninsured families with MIChild and Healthy Kids applications.

Physical Health Care Services include:

  • Nursing assessment
  • Care for minor injuries
  • Treatment of mild discomfort due to headache, menstrual cramps, etc.
  • Monitoring of blood pressure, height, weight, BMI
  • Chronic disease management in partnership with health care provider
  • Referral for primary care and specialty health services
  • Health assessments and risk reduction
  • Assessment of immunization records and immunization clinics

Mental Health Services (with a Licensed Therapist) include:

  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling sessions
  • Family therapy
  • Case management or referral for other mental health services

The focus is on prevention, as well. The choices students make about alcohol, drug, and tobacco use, eating and physical activity, and personal relationships stay with them the rest of their lives. The Hornet Health Center staff is devoted to promoting healthy choices for students. Our mission is to offer students in Pellston services with a focus on preventive health and reduction of risk behaviors, removing barriers to students' academic success, and promoting health and fitness now and in the future.
