Northern Prescription Plans

Northern Prescription Assistance Plan

Free medications may be available to people who do not have prescription coverage and whose income meets guidelines established by the drug companies. For a family of 2 that is $26,400, and for a family of 4 that is $40,000. The health department, in cooperation with Charlevoix Area Hospital and Otsego Memorial Hospital, provides assistance to help complete the paperwork to get free medications.

Northern Prescription Discount Plan

The NPDP card is a way for people without prescription coverage to purchase prescription drugs at lower prices at the pharmacy. Any resident of Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, or Otsego counties who has limited or no drug coverage is eligible. People who present a NPDP card at a participating pharmacy can expect to save about 25% off the retail price. Savings will typically be between 5% and 25%. Discounts as high as 70% are possible but not typical. Savings depend on the kind of medicines used, where you shop and if the pharmacy is already having a sale on medicine.

How does it work?
Take your prescription and your NPDP card to your pharmacy. Almost all pharmacies participate, even out-of-state pharmacies that are part of the large chains like Rite-Aid and CVS. Give the pharmacist your NPDP card and prescription. The pharmacist will fill the prescription and charge you the discount price. You will be expected to pay for the medicine at the discounted price. Always show your card for refills. All drugs will be covered, with the exception of over-the-counter drugs and experimental drugs. There is no cost for the NPDP card or for enrolling in the program. This program is being sponsored by northern Michigan local health departments.
